| In response to the inquiry of Mr. Naroditski, We must first remind Our children that criticism of the Church as a human institution is by no means a sin, and is indeed to be encouraged for the spiritual health of its members. In the case of Mr. Carroll, what We have condemned is not such criticism, but heresy. By heresy, We mean that he misrepresents the Catholic faith, leading readers to believe that error is doctrine. Furthermore, he has called for the destruction of the Catholic faith by its own members. Of his most noteworthy and abominable heretical acts are his appeal for the bishops of the Church to convene an ecumenical council which would, among other things, revoke the infallibility and primacy of the Sovereign Pontiff, edit and censor the Holy Bible (to remove what he calls "anti-Semitic teachings" in the Gospels, indeed, in the words of Christ Himself), and even to go so far as to erase the fundamental doctrine upon which all of Christianity is based and declare that Christ did not redeem humanity on the Cross. This is truly a most sinful and unholy teaching.
We have graciously decided to hear your request, and in accord, We shall not reinstate the Index of Forbidden Books.
In response to the most distinguished Rabbi, We regret to inform him that We shall refrain from passing judgement upon the film "The Passion of the Christ." Any words from Us in favor or in reprimand might too easily be misinterpreted or manipulated in the controversy surrounding this motion picture. We do, however, desire to repeat Our condemnation of those who "seek to create strife and division...by establishing meaningless shibboleths by which they claim to separate the ‘true faithful’ from the ‘modernists.’ We find especial fault in those who have rallied around the motion picture ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ who substitute the approval of a film for belief in Christ as the true test of faith." We also call upon the people of the world to abide by Our excommunication of Mel Gibson, and refrain from any contact with this most sinful and unholy man. God bless you all, and happy Easter.

Apostolic Bull of His Holiness Pius
In Coena Domini
PIUS EPISCOPUS
SERVUS SERVORUM DEI
AD PERPETUAM REI MEMORIAM
To Our Venerable Brethren, the Patriarchs, Primates, Archbishops, Bishops, and other Local Ordinaries in Peace and Communion with the Apostolic See, and to all the Priests and Faithful of the Catholic world.
1. It is the duty of the Church to lead all peoples of the world to a greater knowledge and love of God. We regret with much lamentation that Our Venerable Brothers the bishops and the priests of God’s Church have not been steadfast in upholding their sacred duty. Through their laxity, errors and lies have entered into the Church and corrupted the minds of the faithful. The work of Satan in our modern world cannot be denied as We look upon the evils that visit the Holy Church. We believe that it is time for the Roman Pontiff to exercise the sacred duty which others have neglected and defend the Church from her enemies. Therefore, in the Lenten spirit of renewal and repentance, We issue this index of admonitions to the People of God. Whether within the embrace of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church or without, let all the earth hear Our voice and know the way of Christ and His Church.
2. We condemn those who seek to create strife and division in these already discordant times by establishing meaningless shibboleths by which they claim to separate the "true faithful" from the "modernists." We find especial fault in those who have rallied around the motion picture "The Passion of the Christ," who substitute the approval of a film for belief in Christ as the true test of faith.
3. We condemn those who deny the doctrines of the faith and blaspheme God and His Church in the name of "legitimate dissent" and "healthy criticism." It must be noted, however, that many such persons cannot be blamed for their sins, for they commit these unholy deeds through no fault of their own, but because their minds have been filled with falsehoods and lies by clergy and lay educators who desire to destroy the true Church for their own political goals. We call upon all the Catholic faithful to fight this manipulation of the Faith, and to promote a genuine program of catechesis and Catholic education for both young and old.
4. We condemn those who subscribe to the disordered view that Catholic education need not be truly Catholic. Such persons teach heresy and distorted views of the Holy Faith, nonetheless calling them true manifestations of Catholicism, and refusing to adhere to authentic Christian beliefs by wrapping themselves in the banner of "free speech." Persons who have been most conspicuous in these offenses include the Reverend Fathers Richard McBrien and Charles Curran, both professors at American Catholic universities. We must also name the Society of Jesus as offenders in this category, for this once-respectable and passionately faithful order of holy priests has now become the leader in the movement to destroy Catholic education in its true form.
5. We condemn likewise those who teach the false doctrine that Catholicism is a cultural identity and not a true religion. Such misguided persons as the Reverend Father Andrew Greeley hold that the roots of Catholic identity are in a community atmosphere and in a sort of birthright, rather than in a set of commonly held beliefs and a universal faith.
6. We condemn those who offer false promises of salvation through the superstitious recitation of prayers or employment of holy sacramentals, encouraging presumption and moral laxity in the body of the faithful.
7. We condemn those who have desecrated the Holy Mass in a misguided attempt to induce greater lay participation. Such efforts often end in a lack of respect being paid to the presence of God at the Mass, and even the profaning of the Body and Blood of Christ. Such a mistreatment is not only an affront to the glory of God, but it brings about the effect of rendering the minds of the faithful – and in an especial way the faithful children – to a disbelief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and a rejection of the dogma of transubstantiation.
8. We condemn those who refuse to accept the validity of the Holy Mass as celebrated by the Pauline Missal of 1969. While there is much good in the Tridentine or "Latin" Mass to which such persons subscribe, this rejection of the new rubrics is a rejection of the authority of the Roman Pontiff and the Holy Council whose decrees he has promulgated, and which must be obeyed by all who bear the name "Catholic."
9. We condemn those who make the assertion that the ills of the Church can be solved by expelling from the priesthood those of homosexual tendencies. It cannot be denied that from their number have come many priests who have broken their sacred promises of chastity to cause harm and scandal, yet one cannot overlook the contributions made to the Church by the many holy and wise homosexual men who serve the People of God chastely and selflessly in the priesthood. To sacrifice such good souls on the altar of the modern "god" of public opinion would be a most heinous crime.
10. We condemn the efforts of the government of the People’s Republic of China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to destroy the Catholic Church in their lands and persecute its members while maintaining the pretense of freedom of religion through the travesty of a "Catholic Church" run by the Communist State.
11. For the well-being of the faithful members of the Holy Catholic Church and the well-being of Mother Church herself, We declare the following persons to be excommunicated and anathemized:
Bernard Law, a priest and bishop; for the sin of the spreading of scandal, for defaming the Holy Church, and for the collaboration in the sexual abuse of young people. Furthermore, We declare that he is to be removed from the Sacred College of Cardinals.
James Carroll, a priest under laicization, journalist, and author of the books "Constaine’s Sword" and "Towards a New Catholic Church"; for the sins of heresy and blasphemy, and the breaking of his promise of celibacy by obtaining an illicit marriage while under the Holy Orders of the priesthood. Furthermore, his works are to be placed on the Index of Forbidden Books, which We hereby restore.
Gary Wills, a layman, journalist, and author of the book "Papal Sin"; for the sins of heresy and blasphemy. His works are also to be placed on the Index of Forbidden Books.
John Kerry, a layman and United States senator, for the sins of heresy, sacrilege in desecrating the Blessed Sacrament, and the spreading of scandal.
William Donahue, a layman; for the spreading of scandal and the defamation of the Church through his status as self-proclaimed spokesman for the Catholic Church in the United States, and through his crass and loud-mouthed execution of this "duty."
Joachin Navarro-Valls, a layman, physician, official spokesman for Our Venerable Brother Pope John Paul II, and supernumerary of the movement "Opus Dei;" for the spreading of scandal through his words of bigotry and intolerance towards the many pious homosexual priests of the Church.
Mel Gibson, a layman and film actor; for heresy, disobedience to the Supreme Pontiff, and the spreading of scandal.
We forbid them to receive the sacraments, We forbid them to enter into a church or other holy ground, and We forbid the body of the faithful from any form of communication or relations with them, under pain of the same excommunication latiae sententiae, i.e., immediate and ipso facto.
12. We pray that Our words be well received by the peoples of the world, that they may repent of their sins and turn to the loving embrace of Holy Mother Church. To all who receive Our message, We impart Our most loving and paternal Apostolic Blessing.
Given in Rome, at Saint Peter’s, on the Eighth day of April, the feast of the Lord’s Supper, in the Year of Our Lord two thousand and four, the seventh of Our Pontificate.

| As the Church enters into the solemnity of Holy Week, We give you this joke to provide a moment of levity.
The Pope and the Queen of England are on the same stage at an Anglican and Catholic commemoration of the Anglo-Irish accords - the crowd is huge - thousands. Her Majesty and His Holiness can't help but have a little rivalry - both being heads of churches and all.
The Queen says to the Pope, "Did you know that with just one little wave of my hand I can make every English person in the crowd go wild?" He doubts it, so she shows him. Sure enough, the royal-gloved wave elicits rapture and cheering from every Englishman in the crowd.
Gradually, the cheering subsides. The Pope, not wanting to be outdone by someone wearing a worse frock and hat than he, considers what he could do. So the Pope says to the Queen,"Your Majesty, that was impressive. But did you know that with one little wave of MY hand I can make every Irish person in the crowd go crazy with joy? Their joy will not be a momentary display like that of your subjects, but will go deep into their hearts, and they will speak forever of this day and rejoice - they will recount it to their grandchildren and they to their descendants.
The Queen seriously doubts this, and says so. "One little wave of your hand and all Irish people will rejoice forever? Show me." So the Pope slapped her.

The following is the text of the Sunday address of His Holiness Pius to the pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square:
Beloved children, today’s Gospel tells us of the abundant mercy of our God, who in spite of our sinfulness and disobedience to His perfect will, ceaselessly calls us back to Him, even descending to the earth in the person of Christ Jesus – as we say in the Creed – "for us men and for our salvation." It is this endless love and mercy of God that we must call to mind, beloved children, on this third Sunday of Lent, in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Spain. We desire to let the Spanish people – ever-faithful sons of the Church – know that Our thoughts and Our prayers are with them. We pray that all of you might join Us in Our appeal to the Almighty God and all His holy saints to be with the victims of this appalling tragedy, and to put grace and love in the hearts of men, so that the scourge of terrorism might be lifted from this earth.
[The Holy Father then led the people in reciting the Angelus.]
Holy Father: Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae; All: Et concepit de Spiritu Sancto.
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
Holy Father: Ecce ancilla Domini. All: Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum.
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
Holy Father: Et Verbum caro factum est. All: Et habitavit in nobis.
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
Holy Father: Ora pro nobis, sancta Dei Genetrix. All: Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.
All: Amen.
[At the conclusion of the prayer, the Holy Father said the following.]
We wish you all a most blessed Sunday; may you go in the peace of Christ. | | |
